Reed's Bre Staats goes 5-for-5 and smashes all-time hit record

Bre Staats left no doubt in breaking the all-time state hits record.

USA TODAY Breanna Staats is a senior on the Reed softball team.

Staats, a senior at Reed went 5-for-5 to smash the state record for the most hits in a career. She now has 253 hits in her four seasons on the Raiders' varsity with at least one more game to play.

She had a double, two RBIs, a stolen base and scored three runs in Thursday's game.

Staats is batting .692 in all games this season with 32 stolen bases, 64 runs scored and 74 hits. In league games, she is batting .700 to lead the 5A-North.

The record came in Reed's 14-4 win over McQueen in the Class 5A-North Regional softball tournament on Thursday at Reed.

Stats in playoff games count toward career totals.

Tatum Spangler (Coronado 2015-18) had 249 in her career. Chelie Senini had 245 hits at Bishop Manogue (2016-19).

On Friday, in the first losers bracket game, at Spanish Springs, at 1 p.m., Reed will play Douglas, then that winner will play Spanish Springs at 4 p.m.

The 5A-North Regional championship is set for 10 a.m. Saturday at the higher seed.

The team that emerges from Friday's bracket will play Bishop Manogue at 10 a.m. Saturday at the highest remaining seed. Spanish Springs is No. 1 seed, Bishop Manogue is No. 2, Reed is No. 3 and Douglas is No. 5.

Reed senior Breanna Staats broke the all-time state record for hits in a softball career.
